DemFiles saves campaigns time and money by providing targeted voter lists and the tools to use them effectively. This translates to a smoother, more efficient campaign, and voter outreach that gets the right message to the voters that need to hear it. All this means more votes on Election Day with the same budget and volunteer base.
How do you target voters?
We start by looking at the District to identify the right questions to ask. Then, we use statistical models that we have developed over many campaign cycles to assign each voter and each household a value for your campaign.
Why do you emphasize households rather than voters?
All voter contact - canvassing, direct mail, and phone banks - happen at the household level. More importantly, families themselves have voting patterns. We work hard to understand the “dinner table conversation” going on in every home in order to identify ways to persuade entire households to support your campaign.
What type of statistical models do you use?
We create all of our models based on voter research and many cycles of targeting experience, then calibrate them to fit your campaign's needs. Mike Diamond began his career creating pricing models for financial institutions until he turned his attention toward voter decision theory. Our models are one-of-a-kind and use stochastic calculus and Monte Carlo simulations, multi-variate regression, value-at-risk analysis, and non-linear mathematics to provide insight that your campaign won't get anywhere else.
Can you use polling data for targeting?
Absolutely. Polling data can be retrofitted to the voter file and applied to the targeting models, which means that your targeting data matches your polling results, increasing your campaign's efficiency.
What is allocation analysis?
DemFiles performs allocation analysis to help you decide where to put your resources for greatest effect. Some examples include how many points to spend in various media markets/outlets, where to canvass for petitions, persuasion, and GOTV, how large a list to send mail to, and even which polling places to place your people on Election Day. The results are valuable, and often surprising to even experienced campaign managers.
How accurate are your lists?
Our lists are more accurate than any on the marketplace. We build all of our voter lists in-house, and never outsource the work. Many of our competitors purchase their raw lists from third party data compilers that treat the data as a product and have never been involved in a campaign.
Does DemFiles provide quality control?
Since we actively use the lists for targeting, we can be sure that they are accurate, a quality-control check that data vendors can't provide. In fact, we sometimes find inaccuracies in data provided by the States themselves.
How current is your data?
We update our voter files with registration changes from the state at least quarterly and as often as weekly during peak campaign periods. We scrub the data through the US Postal Service's National Change of Address Database just as often, which means that before you send mail, you know the people you send to will receive it.
Where does your data come from?
DemFiles maintains relationships with Secretary of State offices in each state across the nation, ensuring that we can get the most up to date data on short notice. We also utilize public data from the Census Bureau and Department of Labor and contract with private data vendors to obtain custom information not available with traditional voter files.
Once we have DemFiles data, how do we use it?
DemFiles offers a web-based interface that allows you to access your voter file from anywhere. We customize the interface to make walk lists, call lists, and exports that meet your exact specifications. What's more, our tools are available on hand-helds and at remote locations, which means that setting up remote phone banks and on the real-time field reporting is as easy as 1-2-3.
How can we save money and time with DemFiles?
DemFiles will save you money by targeting your resources to make all of your spending as efficient as possible. Having well targeted lists means that you don't waste money reaching out to voters whose support you already have or those who you are never going to get. Instead, you only spend money and time on the voters who will be valuable to your campaign and affected by your message. You will save time and money and gain efficiency on direct mail, targeted earned and paid media, and your entire field program.
How much can we save with DemFiles?
Tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. We aim to deliver increased efficiency of at least 10%, which means over $100,000 on a million dollar campaign. If polling shows your campaign where to go, DemFiles shows you how to get there by finding the quickest route. Savings accumulate everywhere, from the elimination of undeliverable mail and reduced mail cost from providing your own data, staff time spent on implementation instead of wrestling with tools that don't work, to the increased voter performance received by leveraging the relative costs of various media markets. Finally, DemFiles offers security and peace of mind because you can be assured that you are using the best, most accurate, data and analysis, keeping your vendors accountable, and that you have a targeting team supporting you to call on day or night.
Can you show us our savings?
Absolutely. We can compare lists derived from different targeting methods to show you exactly where you're saving money and getting increased efficiency. Because we do everything “by the numbers” we can even quantify the effect of our recommendations on your budget and human/volunteer resources.
How much does the service cost?
Exact costs vary by State and project, but generally Congressional races cost about $12,000.
Where is the break-even for the campaign?
For a campaign with a budget of $500,000, breakeven is 2.4% increased efficiency. DemFiles delivers an efficiency boost to field and mail of at least 10% and often much more. Even more valuable are the strategic and tactical conclusions we deliver. The real question is “Can you afford not to target?”
VoteBuilder and other list services are sometimes cheaper; why go with DemFiles?
Any hardware store can sell you a hammer, lumber, and nails, but without the guidance and expertise of a carpenter your house will fall flat, even if you know a thing or two about carpentry. In the same way, data shops can provide all the data and tools under the sun, but without someone who understands how to target and appreciates the high level mathematics necessary to do the job right, the data will fall flat. Simply, the data and tools you can get anywhere; the DemFiles difference is in the targeting and analysis.
My mail vendor or media consultant says that they'll do the targeting and that independent targeting is a waste of money.
DemFiles offers accountability checks for other vendors, which is why we make many of them nervous. Quite simply, the company profiting off of every piece of mail or point you purchase is the last person in the world you should be listening to concerning targeting recommendations. They have no incentive to do it properly or find that extra modicum of value hidden in the voter file.
Another vendor claims that the IDs they provide from past campaigns are the reason to go with them.
Target IDs from other campaigns are plagued with inaccuracies. The source of the data can be any number of volunteers, interns, and staffers who may or may not have been properly trained. Moreover, target IDs change from year to year and candidate to candidate, and only rarely are relevant to the campaign at hand. This means that using other campaign's IDs almost always does more harm than good.
